Meet the team: Erik Kolppanen shares his journey from sourcing, procurement, and supply chain to driving business transformations

It’s been a delightful and rewarding experience working at Midagon for several years now. Unlike the newcomers, I have the nice opportunity to introduce myself after years of working for Midagon, allowing me to share a focused view of my time here so far.

My aspiration has always been to plan and achieve something meaningful and concrete - serving value-add for others while gaining experiences, learnings, and new insights. In my early years, I was fascinated by any type of construction, especially related to aircraft and flying. However, in high school, I shifted my focus toward economics and engineering after realising my childhood dream of flying as a career was not feasible. This led me to study Industrial Engineering at the Lappeenranta University of Technology, where I developed a deep interest in Purchasing and Logistics.

I also had the chance to study abroad, spending a year in the UK at Cranfield Institute of Technology, where I earned my first MSc degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. My time there included project work at Ford Europe’s Southampton Transit Van factory, as well as a thesis project work on fighter aircraft wing assembly simulation at BAe Preston. After my studies in the UK, I returned to Lappeenranta, completed my degree, and undertook a second MSc thesis work for the Finnish Aircraft Industry at Kuorevesi. During this period, the Finnish Air Force was evaluating new fighter aircraft candidates as a replacement for the ageing fighters.

After completing my studies, I ended up working for Nokia Mobile Phones. Those were the days when mobile business was booming, and business started to grow exponentially. The first small handheld GSM mobile Nokia 2110 was under development. I got involved as a Sourcing Project Manager in the cost-reduction version of the product development program for the same GSM mobile. This was the kick-off for my 23-year career within the electronics industry at Nokia & Microsoft Mobile.

Nokia provided a front-row seat to the mobile business and its lifecycle, from the introduction to the maturity stage. Over the years, I held various roles within Sourcing & Procurement related to program and project management and business capability development within ICT and supply chain management. I also participated in the Microsoft Mobile merger and later managed materials management operations and availability for key components, including PCBs, flexes, and chargers.

Applying the learnings as a consultant

My journey at Midagon began in December 2016. During my time at Nokia and Microsoft Mobile, I often wondered about the challenges other industries and companies were facing in areas similar to those I was working on to improve business processes and capabilities. I was curious about whether I could apply my experience and insights beyond Nokia and Microsoft. Midagon provided me with exactly that opportunity. At Midagon, I have been eager to explore the challenges and business dynamics of other companies, leverage my expertise, and help them achieve their business objectives and goals e.g., by leading the implementation of new business capabilities and driving various digital transformations.

At Midagon, I’ve had the privilege of working with diverse industries, including electronics and chemicals, where I’ve helped digitalise the Sourcing and Procurement functions. I’ve also prepared ERP strategies, led ERP and surrounding systems implementation projects, and various digital transformation initiatives for the packaging, shipbuilding, and technology & automation for pulp, paper & energy industries.

Each project has involved unique challenges. As a project manager, I’ve been able to leverage my creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. It has been rewarding to see plans transforming into tangible results and witness how my work has impacted the realisation of business objectives, and how this work has fostered my learning and growth.

Diverse challenges combined with a strong culture of support

Working at Midagon is both enjoyable and eye-opening. As an employer, Midagon provides unique challenges across a wide range of industries and engaging projects. The company values, supportive work culture, and encouragement from colleagues make working at Midagon a truly pleasant, exciting and rewarding experience. Despite the unique and complex challenges that come with each project, my own experience and background, others’ support, and working practices & guidelines are available, helping me navigate through and reach the set goals successfully.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors—jogging, relaxing with walks in the forest, picking a variety of delicious mushrooms, fishing and swimming. I also love live music and often attend concerts and other music events. Cooking is another passion, especially when preparing meals for my wife, my three sons, and other family, friends, and guests. I have a special love for summertime and enjoy travelling, including trips abroad. In the summer and autumn, spending time at the cottage by the sea or lake is also close to my family’s heart.
