Orion S/4HANA ERP Transformation

As part of the Future 2025 initiative that targeted to transform Orion’s operations, elevate employee experience, increase productivity, and drive automation to reach quantifiable business benefits, Orion wanted to decommission the current SAP ECC system and implement an S/4HANA solution.

The challenge

At Orion, a significant part of the current business application infrastructure was nearing end-of-life and the current ERP and information available set limitations on process development and ways of working. The Future 2025 Program aimed to transform Orion’s operations and increase productivity and employee experience to a new level, enabled by the implementation of new IT solutions and an increased level of automation. An important aspect of the program was how information can be better utilised in everyday decision-making.  The SAP S/4 HANA implementation was launched to serve as a foundation for this change.

How Midagon helped

Midagon brought in seasoned project management expertise. In close collaboration with Orion’s team, Midagon’s Project Manager took the lead on the large-scale business transformation project. Midagon also assisted Orion during the RFP phase, introducing the Proof of Concept as part of the Due Diligence phase before selecting the final implementation partner.

“It was clear from the beginning that Midagon as an organisation has extensive experience in leading large-scale programs. The cooperation with Midagon was easy from the beginning, and we had constant dialogue regarding the performance. There was also always a true willingness to listen and receive feedback”, says Kim Nylund, Vice President, Future 2025 Transformation Program at Orion.

Results achieved

Though the overall project schedule was extended from the original, and multiple changes (scope, schedule, costs, and resources) occurred along the project journey, the project's outcome was a successful go-live.

The Project Manager was responsible for a large project team consisting of 22 workstreams, with a total of +40 Leads reporting directly to the Project Manager. The manager brought the required structure and discipline to the project and supported the project team in delivering a successful outcome.

Kim Nylund, Vice President, Future 2025 Transformation Program at Orion: “Large-scale ERP projects are some of the most difficult projects organisations can embark on. In addition to having experience leading an ERP project, they require true commitment, perseverance and extremely high stress tolerance from a Project Manager. Not many organisations can provide that, but Midagon did.”
